VILÀ CLARA CERAMISTES, CERAMIC MAKERS SINCE THE YEAR 1950

The town of La Bisbal d’Empordà, the capital of the Baix Empordà region in Catalonia, has a deeply rooted ceramic and pottery tradition. For centuries, it has been one of the most important ceramic centres in Catalonia.

Vilà Clara Ceramistes, one of the town’s ceramic makers, was founded in 1950 by Josep Vilà i Clara and it has continued over the course of different generations until the present. It was many years ago when Josep Vilà, the grandfather, made the first batches of tiles and crockery, in a mezzanine workshop. Today, Vilà Clara Ceramistes designs, produces and commercialises ceramics in its own workshop and shop in La Bisbal d’Empordà, in the province of Gerona.

Vilà Clara Ceramistes mainly produces decorative ceramics for the home, which include tiles, crockery and ornamental or signature pieces. The ceramics are manufactured by the company using traditional methods from the town of La Bisbal, made with red clay that is indigenous to the area, the ceramics are baked twice at high temperatures, using traditional techniques but with an original design and contemporary decoration.

The company’s research and highly developed techniques enable Vilà Clara Ceramistes to offer an extensive range of own colours and glazes for the decoration of pieces, as well as original designs. The company stands apart for its thoroughness, quality and focus on the finished product, delivering immaculate and personalised ceramic pieces. All items are inscribed with the ceramic maker’s signature and are individually hand-decorated in the company workshop.

The works of Vilà Clara Ceramistes are the result of a philosophy based on constant endeavour and a desire to improve, reflecting an eternal dialogue that moves between tradition, renovation, technique and improvisation.
